KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 16 (Bernama) -- The Tanjong Agas Oil and Gas and Maritime Industrial Park in Pekan, Pahang, which has attracted RM6 billion investment, is expected to create about 30,000 jobs over the next 10 years, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said today.
Of the 30,000 jobs, the first 5,000 jobs are expected to be generated within the next two years.
"I believe this project can become a catalyst for our economic growth in this trying time," said Najib, who is the Member of Parliament for Pekan, after the launch of the industrial park by the Sultan of Pahang, Sultan Ahmad Shah.
The event was also attended by Tengku Mahkota Pahang, Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, and Tengku Muda Pahang, Tengku Abdul Rahman Sultan Ahmad Shah.
The RM6 billion investment came from seven companies comprising local and foreign firms, which have agreements with Tanjong Agas Supply Base and Marine Services Sdn Bhd.
The companies are Vantech Dockyard, Tec-Steel Manufacturing Sdn Bhd, Usatech Marine (M) Sdn Bhd, Bitari Abadi Sdn Bhd, Core Competencies Sdn Bhd, Competent Selection Sdn Bhd and Damini Corporation Sdn Bhd.
The industrial park, covering 4,098 acres, is to be developed by Tanjong Agas Supply Base and Marine Services, which is 30 percent owned by the Pahang State Development Corporation (PKNP).
It will be a modern one-stop centr service and offshore base that will serve and support the region's enormous and rapidly growing upstream and downstream oil and gas exploration and production activities.
Among activities provided are shipyard, residentrial and commercial, fabrication yard, dredger yard, manufacturing plant, steel billet plant, bulk terminal, petroleum terminal and warehouses, factories and commercial development.
Najib, who is also the Finance Minister, said the benefits will flow to suppliers of equipment, financial capital and engineering services, construction, logistics, basic utilities like electricity and water as well as roads infrastructure, including the creation of new townships and attracting new foreign direct investments.
"In the long run, apart from creating new economic spin-off, it is envisaged that the development of the industrial park will provide opportunities for local knowledge workers to be employed in the various industries such as fabrication yard, ship repair and maintenance and petrochemicals," he said.
Najib also hoped that the industrial park will utilise as many locals as possible in order to generate more employment and high paying jobs for them.
"Most importantly, this marine industrial park has also the capability to cater for the needs of the regional players in Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Indochina and the Philippines," he said.
Najib said the development was a public-private sector initiative by the Pahang state government and will spur more economic activities in the state.
He also urged all related government ministries and agencies to facilitate the requirements and the needs of this project such as expediting approvals for related licences and other regulatory requirements.
Tengku Abdul Rahman, who is also chairman of Tanjong Agas Supply Base and Marine Services, said the industrial park was also ideal to act as a hub connector for the essential supplies of electricity and natural gas to other areas within Pahang.
Tanjong Agas Supply Base and Marine Services' managing director Mohd Faidzal Ahmad Mahidin said about RM2 billion was needed for building the infrastructure and the company was seeking financial support from KAF Investment Bank Bhd and the federal government.
Construction for the industrial park is scheduled to start in April or May this year and is expected to completed within two to three years, he said.

safhamas: From my reliable sources, I came to know that this idea/proposal was first submitted to PASDEC about two, three years ago by Zee Zee Offshore Sdn Bhd. After a few round of discussions/meetings with the MD of PASDEC, both parties came to some sort of mutual agreement to form a company which will have PASDEC and Zee Zee Offshore as partners. At this point due to lack of funds, Zee Zee Offshore invited Mohd Faidzal Ahmad Mahidin and Badaruddin Masodi to outsource financial arrangement for the new company which has been registered by that time under the name of Pekan Petrobase Sdn Bhd.
After more discussions/meetings, PKNP decided that they are the ones that should get involved instead of PASDEC. And more meetings was arranged including two or three presentation to the MB. Finally MB agrees with the proposal and instructed PKNP to take the lead. Problems arises when the negotiations on the breakdown of shares was carried out. Both Faidzal and Badaruddin wanted equal shares same as the owners of Zee Zee Offshore Sdn Bhd.
